The Wilton Police Department protects the town 24 hours
a day, seven days a week, acting as first responder for
all medical emergencies, patroling over 165 miles of roadway,
and acting as the town's emergency 911 communications center.
The department consists of 44 sworn officers, 2 full-time
civilian communications dispatchers, and two part-time communications
dispatchers, three civilian staff, and is augmented by 12
police explorer scouts. The police fleet consists of 20
vehicles including 10 marked patrol cars, four 4x4 SUV's,
and an Emergency Response/Dive rescue truck. All patrol
sector vehicles have recently been equipped with traffic
stop video recording monitors. In-car computers (MDTs) have
been installed in all patrol vehicles.
Community Programs
offered to citizens of Wilton in 2006 include Crime Prevention
and Neighborhood Watch, I-SAFE Internet Safety Training,
Senior Safety and Education, The Yellow Dot Program, E-911
Dispatch, Police Explorer Post 58, Strategic Traffic Patrol
(STP), Selective Traffic Enforcement, and Child Safety Seat
installations. The RUOK program, which has been in existence
for many years, was improved and enhanced in 2006 with the
assistance of funds from Wilton Kiwanis. This computer program
does daily checks on seniors within the community who sign
up for the service. In July 2006 The Animal Control Department
joined the Police Department and is now under its supervision.
The Wilton Police Department, in conjunction with the Wilton
Fire Department, continues to train with the joint Dive-Rescue
team on a monthly basis. This team is ready to respond to
any water emergency.

The department provides 24-hour fire, rescue, emergency
medical aid and hazardous materials mitigation from two
fire stations, the first at headquarters at 236 Danbury
Road and Station No. 2 at 707 Ridgefield Road. Both are
staffed with a minimum of two firefighter/EMTs at all times.
Other duties include fire prevention, code enforcement and
education services. The staff of 24 employees is augmented
by 21volunteers, though additional volunteers (over age
18) are always needed. The fire chief is William von Zehle,
who was appointed in 1987. The Town of Wilton is currently
rated a 4 by the Insurance Service Office, with 1 being
the highest and 10 indicating no fire protection.

Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

A staff of 52 volunteers (more always needed) provide emergency
ambulance service, with a paramedic on duty 24 hours a day.
The group uses two fully-equipped ambulances and a paramedic
flycar, and receives assistance from the Wilton Fire Department
and the town. The service takes patients to Norwalk Hospital.
Since 1994, Wilton and Weston have jointly provided paramedic
coverage for both towns.
